My Heather Burdeaux Top 10 at 10…
Today is exactly 10 years from when I convinced Heather to say “I do.” I don’t have a history of getting things right, but she is the main and greatest exception.
To celebrate, NewToy is selling Words with Friends and Words with Friends HD for only $.99 each. No more adds or pop-ups. Treat yourself.
But I wanted to offer this list of my top 10 favorite things about Heather (in no particular order).
- She’s still here. Seriously. Her perseverance in marriage to me speaks volumes to her character and godliness. Lord knows I done tried to make her R-U-N-N-O-F-T a dozen times.
- There’s a weird sound she makes while whistling. That she whistles could make it on this list, but when she does it, her throat makes this weird sound… kind of like there’s a pigeon in there singing along. It’s hilarious and adorable.
- She desperately wants to adopt more kids. Special needs… typical… she doesn’t really care. Her heart is open to any child who needs a forever family and my heart is touched greatly by hers.
- She turns me on. What can I say? Me likey. She’s out of my league, but SHHHH… she doesn’t know that.
- She is unimpressed by me. She doesn’t take any of my crap.. not even for a second. That’s good. I tend to take advantage of those who do.
- She uses “replacement words” when she can’t think of the right one. I guess I have to give an example here… she might say, “They gave her chemicals,” when she meant to say “They gave her chemo,” but she couldn’t think of the right word in the moment. She expects me to know what she means, but since I NEVER know what she means - nope, not once - it’s usually pretty funny.
- She’s up for whatever. I don’t mean this in a what-do-you-want-to-do-tonight way. She’s sensitive to following where God leads us. If God says “Russia”, she says, “let’s go.” If God says “Southeast Houston,” she says, even though it pains her to do so, “let’s go.” Just like Isaiah said, “Here am I. Send me,” before hearing the job description, she says, “let’s go.”
- Best mom ever. Watch her for a day or two. You’ll agree.
- She loves to pour herself out for the least of these. She is an in-demand speaker and consultant to groups of parents who have children with special needs. I try to convince her to monetize this skill, but she refuses. She truly wants to see these families and individuals prosper.
- She loves her job as my rib. She takes this charge seriously, and sees it as a sort of protective role. She tries to guard my heart from outside attacks. Things that don’t bother or hurt me wound her deeply. That’s because she views herself as so joined with me that she takes the brunt of the pain for me.
I love this woman. I am blessed beyond belief, and way more than I deserve.
The following song is appropriate for today… the chorus says, “I’m just happy you stuck around…”
